FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually most if not all of them. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly.
Feel free to this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. These are games that meet substantially all of the following criteria: (1) naval based wargame (2) focuses on Age of Sail, roughly between 1571-1863 (3) primarily focuses on the Age of Sail where cannons and similar armaments were used aboard ships (4) addresses the "theme" in an interesting or compelling manner that leaves the player with a better understanding of naval engagements during this period (and its various aspects) and (5) fun to play (understanding that this can be very subjective, especially for wargames). There is a multitude of things you can do, like crafting, build your ability to craft things that are needed by other players, sell them & prosper.Below is my Top 10 list of games covering naval warfare during the Age of Sail. You will be able to assist in many different ways, fighting is not the only way to help the never ending war. Join battles with other friendly players already engaged to get experience, lend a hand defeting the enemy with a smaller ship.Īs you grow things the way you want to grow. It is a challenge to get to the point to actually be able to go up against them. That is where the experienced players have the advantage, they already have strong ships with lots of guns. Yes it will take time to build to the point to afford the better ships. Yet it is easy enough to earn enough to have a fleet of various ships simply doing trade & missions. You can purchase cheap ships with in game currency to get going. The DLC ships get replaced every 24 hours, they are good for learning in as you do not have to grind to get funds to purchase new ships. Do not engage enemy intentionally with a ship you are not willing to lose. The NPC ships fight back, attack a large group, they will kill you. Though be warned, sail into some places or even out of some ports, you will be attacked. There is a lot to do, in PVP where actually fighting the enemy is not necessary.
is needed for details on what trade routes are best, and out of normal enemy patrol routes.
Players will also make suggestions that are not the best for building ships, the guide will clear up details on what type woods do what, etc.
A lot of the steam guides are out of date, and sometimes have incorrect details. So you can avoid PVP and focus on trade & NPC ships to gain wealth, combat experience, and upgrades. There are places to trade in the PVP where the enemy players rarely if ever go. There are places you can build your character wealth without much interference from enemy players. They like to gang up on new players and take what they have. You are going to get sunk by the more experienced players with much better ships. Sure it is an online game with PVE & PVP. I held off due to reviews, wish I had not. Game is better than what so many negative reviews claim.
